Atoll 11’ Inflatable Paddle Board In-Depth Review

The Atoll 11’ inflatable SUP has a lot of things going for it and we have really enjoyed reviewing this board.

This ISUP is stable and easy to paddle. The shape and design with the nice tapered nose and large touring fin keeps it gliding smoothly and we found it to move faster than many other 32” wide boards that we have tried.

There is a noticeable difference in how well this board glides and we definitely notice less drag.

Weighing only 21 lbs. and with the well thought out design it takes less effort to paddle than many others of similar size even though it is a stable 32″ wide board.

I get a lot of people who ask me which board I would recommend if they don’t want to spend the high end price tag but still want a decent SUP that is durable and fun. I think the Atoll 11’ is a great fit!

It comes in some really nice earthy tones, aqua, sand, green, and blue.

MORE INFO

With that let’s dive into some more details on the Atoll inflatable SUP.

paddling two Atoll boards on Alouette Lake

I find in general an 11’ board tends to be quite versatile. It is an ideal length that just about anyone can feel comfortable on.

It provides enough space to bring along the kids, your dog or to load up with lots of gear but it isn’t so long that it gets hard to paddle or turn.

If you are new to stand up paddle boarding an 11’ SUP is usually a pretty safe bet. Add in the 32” centre width and you have a nice stable board that is easy to paddle on most types of water.

What makes the Atoll extra nice to ride is the tapered nose and tail that allows it to move a little more swiftly through the water.

See it in action in the quick video below where I am paddling the Atoll touring board on one of my favourite local mountain lakes.

With the strong tapered nose you do lose a bit of stability but nothing major.

It’s nice to have added stability especially when you are just starting out but there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re slugging through the water because your board is just too wide.

Although the Atoll is not as fast as a leaner 30” wide board the point is that for it’s size it glides well, still feels quite stable and is perfect for recreational paddling on lakes, calm rivers or around ocean bays.

There is no back kick tail on this board, which generally helps with foot support and placement when doing pivot turns.

However if you want to give it a go the kick tail isn’t critical and we found this board still fairly easy to pivot.

IMPORTANT FEATURES

atoll back side by side

I like that the 11’ Atoll board isn’t cluttered. It has all the important features covered without going overboard.

Below are some of the great features offered with this ISUP.

FRONT BUNGEES

Atoll front bungee section

The large front bungee section can hold quite a bit of gear. Use it to store a dry bag, your PFD, water bottle, etc.

MULTIPLE D-RINGS

Atoll inflatable stand up paddle board D-rings

There are 15 stainless steel D-rings in total.

Besides the 6 D-rings being used by the front bungees and the back D-ring for the leash there are also 4 D-rings on each side of the board.

With all these D-ring attachments you can easily secure a seat, cooler or any extra gear you’d like to bring.

CENTRE CARRY HANDLE

The center carry handle has a neoprene cover stitched on. The neoprene cover helps to make it more comfortable for your hand when carrying the board.

We’d love to see a little more padding on that neoprene cover, it’s fairly thin. However it is better than nothing.

If you have ever carried a SUP with just a regular nylon handle you’ll know how uncomfortable it can get. A neoprene cover is a small thing but makes a big difference.

8” REMOVABLE TOURING FIN

Atoll center touring fin

The centre touring fin secures to the US fin box with a bolt and screw – no tools required.

The fin is sleek and strong and makes a big difference in tracking and backend stability when attached.

With this kind of fin attachment you can adjust the fin positioning – forward, center or back – for a customized performance.

2 ATTACHED SIDE FINS

tri-fin

The two side fins are small but helpful. The tri-fin configuration helps create a stable back end and helps with easy turns but will also slow the board down a little bit.  The tri-fin setup is very common for all-around versatility.

DIAMOND GROOVE EVA TRACTION PAD

The traction pad is fairly long, comfortable when kneeling or standing and provides good grip.

BACK GRAB HANDLE

The back grab handle is ideal for pulling your board in from the water or grabbing if you should fall in.

SETUP

Using the hand pump that is included in the package I inflated the board to 6 PSI in double action mode. Then I switched the pump to single action mode in order to make the rest of inflation easier until it reached 15 PSI.

Total pumping time for me was just over 7 minutes. It could be done faster depending on your speed.

You can see in the video that at the end of inflation it is starting to get really hard to keep pumping. You don’t need to inflate any more once it reaches 15 PSI. It takes a bit of effort but is very doable and a good warmup before you hit the water. 🙂

If you want to make things a little easier on you on electric pump is the way to go!  These are the best electric pumps for inflatable SUP’s.

At 15 PSI it is totally rigid and able to hold a lot of weight.

inflating the atoll inflatable sup

Securing the fin to the US fin box can be done without tools. It may take a bit more time your first time out but once you know what you are doing the fin install is quite easy and quick. – Check out our Setup video above to see how it is done!

Plus the fact that this board has the universal US fin box means you can change out your fin later if you wanted to.

Once the board is inflated and the fin is inserted into the fin box, the only thing left to do is to attach your leash to the back D-ring and adjust your paddle.

The whole process is very quick and can be done in 10 minutes or less.

INCLUDED ACCESSORIES

BACKPACK

2019 Atoll bag

For 2019 Atoll has upgraded their backpack and the new one is a big improvement.

The new backpack is well made, unzips on all three sides making it easy to get the board in and out and has padded shoulder and waist straps for comfort.

carrying the Atoll backpack

Since this board only weighs 19 lbs. it is fairly easy to carry on your back.  You can adjust the shoulder, waist and chest clips for a good fit.

This bag also has a side paddle holder to store the paddle and a top ID pocket so it doesn’t get lost.

3-PIECE CARBON SHAFT PADDLE

3-piece carbon shaft Atoll SUP paddle

Atoll has upgraded their paddle for 2019 as well.  Included in their package is a 3-piece carbon shaft SUP paddle.

It is a nice light weight paddle that feels great to use.  The paddle can be adjusted for your height and easily locks into place.  Typically for touring you will want the paddle to be 6-8″ above your head.

With a lighter weight paddle you can go further with less stress on your muscles and joints.  The paddle comes apart into three pieces and fits nicely inside the included backpack.

Another great upgrade for their 2019 package.

10’ COILED SUP LEASH

Atoll 10' coiled sup leash

The coiled SUP leash attaches to your ankle and to the back D-ring on your board. It will keep your board close if you should fall in the water.

DOUBLE ACTION HAND PUMP

Atoll hand pump

The hand pump works well and includes an integrated pressure gauge so you can watch your progress. Start in double action mode with the red clip in.

You can inflate your board to roughly 6 – 7 PSI then remove the red clip to finish off in single action mode.

REPAIR KIT

All inflatable SUP’s come with a repair kit that includes a couple of PVC patches, waterproof glue and a valve tightener.

  1. John “T” Stapp says:

I ordered my Atoll board on Sunday of the long weekend. It was delivered to my house on Thursday. Beyond my expectations. I can’t wait to get on this board it looks great and all the accessories seem to be of high quality. For those of us on the west coast I don’t see why you would buy anything other board at this price point.

  2. I’ve had one of these for about a year now and it’s been a great tool to learn on. what I don’t understand yet are the performance characteristics of setting the fin forward or backward in the box. Any guidance?

    • Hi Randall, Basically With the fin in the forward position the board will be easier to turn right and left and to maneuver so this is often favoured for surfing. Sliding the fin to the back of the fin box, towards the tail of the board will make your SUP harder to turn and maneuver yet it will stiffen the movement so that the board goes straighter for a longer period of time. So this position is good for long straight paddles. The center position is the most commonly used and the most versatile. This position is great for cruising around. The board should manoeuvre well and track well. Hope that helps! 🙂
